After signing Finnish Elite League MVP Ville Leino to a one year contract two weeks ago, presumably after missing out on the Fabien Brunnstrom sweepstates to the Dallas Stars, the Wings announced the signings of two of their 2006 draft picks.
DETROIT — Red Wings general manager Ken Holland announced today that the club has signed forward Dick Axelsson and defenseman Logan Pyett to three-year entry level contracts. In keeping with team policy, additional terms of each contract were not disclosed.
Axelsson (6-foot-2, 176-pounds) was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played for Djurgardens Stockholm of the Swedish Elite League in 2007-08. Axelsson finished the season with 12 goals and 13 assists in 47 games.
Pyett (5-foot-11, 198-pounds) was a seventh round selection (212th overall) of the Red Wings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He captained the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League in 2007-08 and finished the season with 20 goals and 34 assists in 62 games.
